Freja

Freja is an authentication server based on the Open Authentication standard called OATH. Freja is used to achieve strong authentication for secure remote access to corporate networks and for strengthening authentication to corporate applications.

Using an open standard for authentication gives the freedom to choose hardware devices from a number of vendors in competition. For this reason OATH tokens are less expensive than their proprietary counterparts. Freja can be combined with any OATH compliant device such as one-time password tokens or used together with scratch cards for large volume deployments.

Freja also has extensions to take advantage of shared authentication schemes such as the UK Government EAS Scheme. Freja extends the use of EAS to facilitate local network logon. It effectively translates between local network and EAS user identities and draws upon both local directories and the Government Gateway attribute store in order to allow more granular access rights management to local applications and the local network itself. By use of the SOAP interface in Freja, EAS authentication can be extended to legacy applications or Single-Sign-On applications.

In cases where a group of local authorities wish to create a hub to share access to the Government Gateway, Freja supports a cascaded (or hierarchical) deployment model. Through its Secure Token Services interface (STS) Freja can be set up as an Identity provider in its own right and issue SAML2 credentials in a federated identity trust model.

Finally, while primary authentication is externalised, Freja offers fall-back authentication through the local directory and/or OATH, thereby allowing the local authority to retain control of its users. From experience this has been a fundamental requirement for any local authority.
